5 Frugal Habits I've Developed Since Starting Law School
I've been MIA, stressed, and exhausted this past month! Even now, as I write this post, I have so much to do and I'll probably end up staying up late finishing it, but ya know what? I do what I want!
Anyway, since I've been here, I notice that I'm more cognizant (and stressed) about my finances. To say that I've cried about my current financial situation would be an understatement.
BUT I've adjusted! Kind of... Here is a list of things I've noticed I do differently with my money since starting Law School.
1. Cutting my own hair
Ok so confession, I started cutting my hair way before I started school. But it's a habit that I actively choose to continue.
So actually, I messed it up once and am still paying for it ha! I usually just trim it up, with some layers in the front, but one day I decided to give myself layers all around and I royally screwed it up. I did my normal trim one fateful night, and looked at my hair and thought "Ew." My hair just looked so plain Jane, and I wanted something wild, but my wallet couldn't afford wild at that moment. Thus, all around layers popped into my mind! Wild enough to placate me for a while and 100% free! I found a youtube video on DIY layers and thought 'hmmm this one doesn't look too bad'. I should've been wary when the girl said at the beginning of the video "I know it looks like a lot of hair you're cutting off, but I promise you it's going to turn out so so pretty", but I just went right ahead and chopped off globs of hair! Inches upon inches of hair. I was mortified with the outcome! I literally had a super long mullet.
Anyway, now I have to curl my hair so it's not as noticeable. However, sometimes I get lazy and straighten my hair so you can definitely see how uneven it is! Oops!
2. Thrift shopping
Poppin some tags... No really, thrift shopping is pure gold! I used to only go for crafts and for Halloween costume ideas. But its grown on me.
My fav has to be Out of the Closet Thrift Shop. The people there are super friendly and I've found some of the cutest things there! I feel so hipster when I shop there, it's awesome! & for every dollar spent there, 96¢ goes to HIV/AIDS programs and services. Shop for a bargain price and give back!
Macklemore was onto something there, people!
3. Not driving everywhere
It kinda helps that I live close to my school so I can literally roll out of bed 20 til and still make it on time, albeit a little disheveled! Friends will drive me home after class (quality), and I usually just stay around my apartment for the remainder of the night. There are a couple coffee shops, a Jason's Deli, and a tiny market around my apartment so I have all I need in my little corner of Columbus!
Although, it has been getting colder and raining more so I've been driving to class... GAH I'M SO LAZY!
4. Pregame! Pregame! Pregame!
This one is a MUST! Drinks here aren't as cheap as they are in Lubbock.
I'll have my drinks paid for occasionally by friends when I'm out, but I like paying for my own drinks. I-N-D-E-P-E-N-D-E-N-T, the shoes on my feet, I bought them!
Well, as independent as I can be while living off loans and getting help from my family ha!
5. The hierarchy of food
I try not to eat out too much, especially because it makes me feel wasteful when I know that I have food at home I could be eating instead of a $30 meal.
That's where my hierarchy of food comes in! The higher the food group on my pyramid, the more likely I'll spend monies on it!
I won't lie, most of my money goes towards Hot Cheetos, coffee, and pumpkin rolls at the moment. I'm surprised I'm not sponsored by Frito-Lay and Nescafe at this point, seriously.
One place I will splurge on is my absolute FAVE restaurant here in Cbus: Marcella's!
Oh. My. Lanta. This place ie heaven! Every time I go, I always leave with a happy tummy. They have the best meatballs I've ever had in my entire life. Literally melt in your mouth, savory deliciousness that makes you crave more and more and more. Salivating thinking about it right now! I don't say this lightly; I could eat there every day! It has definitely become a 'Treat Yo Self' place for me here. Marcella's definitely has secured its place on the top of my hierarchy of food.
Don't get me wrong. By no means am I complaining about my current circumstances. But I did get used to working on a regular basis and having an income. I came to rely on it and not having that has thrown me for a curveball (get it, cause the world series is going on right now #GoStros).
